Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have invested in Fusion Esports Group, the owner of Astralis, through NXTPLAY. The announcement on Tuesday, 29 September, comes after audited accounts warned that an Astralis subsidiary depended on additional liquidity that had not been secured.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The size of NXTPLAY’s stake, how much funding Fusion will receive and whether the investment addresses the subsidiary’s liquidity needs remain unclear.

Accounts raise questions over funding

Fusion acquired Astralis in September 2025. Its operating subsidiary, Astralis CS ApS, reported a DKK 19.1 million ($2.9 million) net loss for 2025, negative equity of DKK 3.9 million ($591,000) and cash of DKK 97,633 ($14,800) at 31 December. Its average full-time headcount fell from 18 to 11.

Auditor BDO highlighted a material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on Astralis CS ApS’s ability to continue operating. Management said the company received a payment from Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund in April 2026 and expected a capital process during the third quarter, potentially alongside further EIFO loans. Those negotiations had not been finalised when the report was signed on 1 August.

The accounts also said a review after the takeover found that bookkeeping was not up to date and incorrect VAT returns had been filed. The company said it had corrected the returns.

Investment details remain undisclosed

Courtois and Vila founded NXTPLAY, whose portfolio includes French club Le Mans FC, Spain’s CD Extremadura and Belgium’s KRC Genk. Fusion CEO Jonas Gundersen described their investment as “a milestone moment for us.” Courtois, identified as NXTPLAY co-founder and partner, said: “Astralis is a team I’ve known for some time. I like where the group is heading and the ambition to build something bigger around esports,”

A company-register entry dated 24 September recorded a DKK 752.76 nominal capital increase, issued at 4,251 times nominal value. That implies about DKK 3.2 million ($484,000) for roughly 2.4% of the enlarged share capital, but the register does not identify the subscriber. NXTPLAY is not listed among Fusion’s registered owners; the register includes shareholders holding at least 5%.

What remains to be established

It is not known whether the September capital increase represents NXTPLAY’s investment or the full raise anticipated in the accounts. The amount and terms of EIFO funding are also not public, while the terms of Fusion’s amended articles have not been established. Until more details emerge, the effect of the new investment on Astralis’s liquidity remains uncertain.
