Fifa’s technical report on the 2026 World Cup has identified a growing variety of tactical approaches, including more teams building attacks with a back three, but found no single formula for success. The 500-page report, published on Friday, examined all 104 matches at the tournament using advanced data and video analysis.

The report identified 11 key tactical and technical trends. Among them were wide player rotations, changes in the point of attack, attacking transitions, structured high pressing, defensive blocks and counter-pressing.

Different approaches

Tom Gardner, Fifa’s football performance insights department lead, said the clearest change between 2022 and 2026 was the variety of styles teams used — and their ability to carry out different strategies successfully. Building with a back three stood out in the analysis, he said, but champions Spain did not use that approach.

“So we’re not saying that if you want to be a successful team, you have to build up in a back three,” Gardner said. He described it instead as an approach the analysts saw more often and one that teams were able to execute well.

The report pointed to “contrasting routes to success”, from aggressive high presses to disciplined low blocks and rapid transitions. Gardner said some teams pressed high in player-for-player systems, while others stayed compact in a deep defensive block. What stood out, he said, was how teams played to their strengths rather than following one tactical model.

Cape Verde was cited as an example of how compact defending, collective organisation and proactive goalkeeper involvement could help a team compete against technically superior opponents. The report’s conclusion was that there was “no single winning formula”.

Analysis beyond the final score

Fifa said its data collection unit was able to record actions, interactions and phases of play that are not routinely available elsewhere in the industry. Combined with player and ball tracking data, the analysis examined movement and positioning across the pitch to explain not only what happened, but how and why.

What the findings mean

The rise of the back three is a trend Fifa observed, not a prescription for teams to follow. Fifa said the back three was not a requirement for success, and Gardner highlighted the variety of tactical strategies and teams playing to their strengths.

Fifa’s chief of global football development, Arsène Wenger, said ideas at the highest level continue to evolve. “New ideas emerge, existing principles are adapted and the solutions developed by one team can influence the game far beyond a single tournament,” he said.
