Dragon Ranger Gaming opened VCT Threshold China with a 2-0 win over Rare Atom on 21 October, keeping their bid for a 2027 VCT China guest place on track. The Week 1 victory sets up a meeting with FunPlus Phoenix on Friday, 23 October.

The event is being held at THE HUB Performing Arts Center and runs until 1 November. Its Week 1 winner will earn a VCT China place for 2027, while teams that lose in Week 1 still have a route through the Week 2 playoff.

Sweep goes against the rankings

Dragon Ranger Gaming entered the best-of-three match ranked 208th on Elo with a rating of 1461 and a 49-54 record across 103 rated matches. Rare Atom were ranked 74th, rated 1622, with a 22-11 record in 33 matches.

Rare Atom chose Summit in the map veto, but Dragon Ranger Gaming took the map in 46 minutes. Dragon Ranger Gaming then won their pick, Lotus, in 48 minutes, leaving Sunset unused as the decider.

The result ended a difficult run for Dragon Ranger Gaming. They had lost 0-2 to Any Questions Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 3 2026 after earlier 1-2 defeats to Trace Esports and TEC Esports in VCT China Stage 2 2026. They had also beaten Wolves Esports and JD Gaming 2-1 during that stage.

Dragon Ranger Gaming had won the teams’ previous meeting, beating Rare Atom 3-0 at VCT Ascension China 2025 on 19 October 2025. Rare Atom arrived at Threshold after a 0-2 loss to JD Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 1 2026.

A route back to VCT China

Dragon Ranger Gaming held a VCT China guest slot but were not selected as one of the region’s partners for 2027-2028, according to Sheep Esports. VCT China will have eight partner teams rather than ten in that cycle, making a guest place through Threshold a route back for Dragon Ranger Gaming.

Week 1 brings together five VCT China teams and seven national teams in a single-elimination best-of-three bracket running from 21 to 25 October. Week 2 follows from 27 October to 1 November, with Week 1 losers joined in its playoff by one additional national team. Rare Atom therefore remain in contention despite the defeat.

All the other first-round matches also ended 2-0: Unsettled Resentment beat Octagonal Disposition Gaming, Any Questions Gaming beat World Sports Invictus Gaming, and Wolves Esports beat A Team. If Dragon Ranger Gaming advance past FunPlus Phoenix, the Week 1 semi-finals are scheduled for 24 October, followed by the final on 25 October.
