The San Antonio Spurs are the leading pick to win the 2027 NBA title in the league’s annual general manager survey, receiving 50% of the vote ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder on 43%. Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama also led the MVP vote with 77% as general managers assessed the upcoming season.

The results, released on Thursday, 15 October, come after San Antonio lost to the New York Knicks in last season’s Finals. The Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers also received title votes in the survey of all 30 NBA general managers.

Wembanyama dominates individual categories

Wembanyama averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 3.1 assists last season. He was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in a unanimous vote, the first player to win the award that way.

His support extended beyond the MVP question. He received 93% of votes when general managers were asked which player they would start a franchise with, and 97% in both the best defensive player and best interior defender categories. Nikola Jokić, Anthony Edwards, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jayson Tatum also received MVP votes.

San Antonio guard Dylan Harper was the leading choice for a breakout season. Harper primarily came off the bench as a rookie but was one of the Spurs’ playoff standouts, and the team has tried him in a preseason starting lineup alongside De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle.

Rookie vote centres on Boozer

Memphis Grizzlies forward Cameron Boozer received 50% of votes for Rookie of the Year. Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 draft pick who joined the Chicago Bulls, followed on 20%.

AJ Dybantsa, selected by the Washington Wizards, received 17%, while Darryn Peterson, selected by the Utah Jazz, received 13%. Last season’s survey gave Cooper Flagg 97% of the Rookie of the Year vote; he went on to win the award after a close race with Kon Knueppel.

Philadelphia faces an uncertain season

The 76ers received 73% of votes for making the best overall offseason moves, following the signing of LeBron James and a trade for Jaylen Brown. Philadelphia also signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade, and drafted Labaron Philon Jr. with the No. 22 pick.

Those additions have not made the general managers certain of Philadelphia’s prospects. The 76ers led the vote for the team whose success will be toughest to predict, at 27%. They were one of only two Eastern Conference teams to receive title votes, alongside the defending champion Knicks.
